Hi,

I'm new here and I think I got infected with virtumonde. My son downloaded some sort of game yesterday and the computer has been acting slow and strange. I ran scans from both Adaware and Spybot and Spybot came up with Virtumonde....then it fixed it but I don't think it's gone. I also get a whole bunch of msgs from Spybot regarding a Browser Helper Object. It also disabled my Automatic Windows updates and won't let me enable them anymore.

I am running WinXP that has Service Pack 2 installed.

I am not very good with computers so can you please give me an easy fix for this problem. Thank you for any help. I really appreciate it.

I copied the log file from HIjack this.

Hi,
welcome to Atribune.org.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan (Full scan is optional. According to the program's creator Quick Scan will do just fine.).
Click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

If Malware is found...
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
Please save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Logs can be retrieved at a later date from the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware main screen:

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Click the Logs tab.
Double-click log-mm.dd.yyyy [xxxxxx].txt.

In your next reply, please include:
-The log from Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
- A new HijackThis log

Hi,

first a question: did you runned MBAM before or after HijackThis?

Please disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the fix.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Open HijackThis, click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries( if prrsent)/

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn0\yt.dll

I did that MBAM scan first, then I did the Hijack this.

I just disabled the teatimer and now I'm going to reboot and then do the rest of your directions.

Thank you.

Ok...here are the new logs. It looks like there are no infections anymore. Btw, how can I prevent any of this stuff from getting into my computer? I have been using spybot and adaware. Thank you so much for helping me biggrin.gif ....I really appreciate it. I was going crazy this morning. The computer was almost at a complete standstill and for a while I couldn't even connect to the internet.

It is also important to keep your Java updated as there is the possibility that some malware uses out of date Java installs to infect pc's. Test if your version is the latest here.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 6 .
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (13.9 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log. Let me also know how things are running.

I think I made a mistake when I deleted the Java in the add/remove programs. I saw two Jave updates in there and I removed them and then rebooted. Now when I click on the Java program that I d/l it doesn't work. What did I do wrong?

Close all other windows and browers, except HijackThis, and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please visit the webpage HERE for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Do I have to use that combofix? I went to the site and read the instructions and they seem very scary for me to do. I'm not familiar with the registry and any sort of recovery.

Pretty good.....or at least the same way as before the attack. Web pages load fast, applications opening up quickly.

So is the malware gone?

Your computer now seems to be clean.

  1. Clean out Temporary Files etc.
This program is for Vista, XP and Windows 2000 only
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
    1. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    2. Under Main choose: Select All. Then remove the check mark for cookies
    3. Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • Remove the check mark for Cookies
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt if asked .
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and
    • choose: Select All.
    • Remove the check mark for Cookies
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
It is a good idea to do this every few weeks as a lot of junk collects there over time.

  2. Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
    Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

  3. Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK

  4. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program. If you want to help the developer of the program and get more information about what the programs that you see in Winpatrol please check out Winpatrol Plus. It does not need a new download.
  5. If you are using Internet Explorer v. 7 please read and follow the recommendations at this site. http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm
  6. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least a few times a week (Once a day is a good idea). If you do not update your anti virus software it will not be able to catch new variants that come out.
  7. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Windows Firewall is not recommended.
Be restrictive with granting access to the Internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not, make the block permanent.
  8. Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems.
  9. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently or better yet set computer for automatic updates.
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  11. Read and follow the suggestions given at this web site by Miekiemoes http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem...prevention.html that will give you more information on some of the points above.

  12. Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. (preventionspeech by Elrond)

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Vundo. Please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to government or government agencies that something will get done.

Regards,

Rosty.
